TMJ Treatments
Serving Bethesda, Clarksville
and the Greater Maryland area
If you've been diagnosed with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ, or TMD), we offer a variety of solutions to halt and even reverse the condition and its associated symptoms.
Depending on the type and severity of your condition, we may recommend one or more of the following TMJ treatment options:
- Diagnosis and treatment with a transcutaneous neural stimulator, or TENS device
- Orthodontics
- Tooth modification
TENS
A transcutaneous neural stimulator, or TENS device, is a specially designed device that emits low frequency electrical stimuli to relax the jaw, and to measure the activity of related joints and muscles.
These readings are then analyzed and used to fabricate a custom designed orthotic device that manipulates the jaw muscles and prevents spasms, allowing the jaw muscles and the TMJ to heal.
This orthotic device will generally be worn for several months to allow the muscles to heal fully and to ensure that TMJ symptoms do not recur.
Once this process is complete, your dentist may recommend continuing to wear the device, or may recommend another solution to maintain the proper structure, such as orthodontics or tooth modification, both described below.
Orthodontics
Orthodontic solutions to TMD involve restructuring the bite to ensure ideal alignment and a healthy TMJ. This may be done with traditional braces, or with the Invisalign tooth straightening system.
Tooth modification
In some cases, TMD can be resolved with tooth modification procedures, which allow your dentist to reshape, resize, and even reposition your teeth for optimal alignment.
Some of the TMJ treatment tooth modification procedures we may recommend include:
- Porcelain fillings
- Porcelain crowns
- Porcelain veneers
- Dental bonding
- Dental implants
- Dental bridges
- Full or partial dentures
