TMD Frequently Asked Questions

Serving Bethesda, Clarksville
and the Greater Maryland area

What is TMD?

TMD, or TMJ describes a condition in which the temporomandibular joint, teeth and muscle, becomes misaligned. Learn more about TMD / TMJ on our TMD page.

How do I know if I have TMD / TMJ?

TMD can manifest itself in a number of different symptoms, including:

  • Pain and soreness of the jaw
  • Clicking or popping of the jaw
  • Unexplained headaches and migraines
  • Difficulty speaking and chewing
  • Tooth grinding, or bruxism

Learn more about these and other symptoms on our TMD Common Symptoms and Treatments page.

Should I have it treated?

Yes. TMD / TMJ can tend to progress very rapidly if left untreated, causing dental problems such as excessive tooth wear and damage, tooth loss, and other problems. These issues, in turn, can cause TMJ to worsen further.

What treatments are available?

We offer a range of treatments for TMD / TMJ, depending on the type and extent of the problem. These treatments include diagnosis and treatment with a TENS unit and specially calibrated orthotic devices, as well as orthodontic solutions and tooth modifications. Learn more about our treatment options on our TMD treatments page.
