Dental implants are the only full tooth replacement option available today. This means that not only is the visible portion of the tooth replaced, but the root is replaced as well.

Why full tooth replacement?

When we lose a tooth, the loss goes beyond the obvious problems associated with the missing biting and chewing surface. We also lose the root of the tooth, which can cause other problems, including:

  • Shifting of surrounding teeth
  • Changes in the jaw structure, including imbalances that can affect the TMJ

The elements of a dental implant

A dental implant consists of two major parts: The implant itself, and the tooth prosthetic, usually a porcelain crown.

The dental implant itself is a titanium screw that is surgically placed into the jaw so that it replicates the placement and function of the original tooth root. This screw serves multiple functions, including preventing absorption and weakening of the jawbone; and serving as a fixture for the prosthetic tooth.

The prosthetic tooth is a replacement of the visible portion of the tooth. In most cases, this will be a porcelain crown.

Other tooth replacement options

While we recommend dental implants for the most complete tooth replacement option, many of our patients prefer one of these other tooth replacement options:

  • Full or partial dentures—Dentures, either full or partial, offer a minimally invasive tooth replacement option for the visible portion of the tooth. Unlike dental bridges, dentures are removable.
  • Dental bridges—A permanent replacement option for the upper or visible portion of the tooth, dental bridges are another popular option for tooth replacement.
