Although braces are available and effective for both children and adults, braces for children address many issues unique to a growing and developing child.
In general, there are two stages in orthodontic treatments for children.
During the active phase, we use braces to gently and slowly guide the developing teeth into the appropriate alignment. This allows the tooth sockets and underlying structure of the mouth to adapt to the corrected tooth alignment.
During the retention phase, we will often prescribe a special retainer to secure the teeth in their final configuration to ensure that they are stable and the changes are solidified.
When necessary, we also provide special orthodontic appliances to help direct the growth and alignment of the jaw as the bite and the facial structure develops.
